RIGID INFLATABLE (style) BOAT ~ RIB 2.5
The RIB 2.5 is a RIB-style dinghy built from timber, 4mm Marine Ply and 12mm Marine Ply using the Stitch-n-Glue technique, but with the buoyancy provided by closed cell Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) in lieu of the usual inflatable collar. It is a small boat intended for private use in sheltered waters only and may be suitable as a tender for a larger yacht.
Construction is composite: fibreglass over stitch-n-glue marine ply. While mostly very simple, forming the timbers for the bottom longitudinals (which
are beneath the hull bottom), the buoyancy support batten (which follows the chine)
and the gunwale may present some challenges, because of the 3D shapes of these
members.
The buoyancy collar is EVA foam cut, laminated, glued and shaped as necessary,
then covered by "Rip Stop" nylon fabric stapled or laced to the gunwale and support
batten.
No performance prediction is offered because there are too many variations in load
and trim ~ and because the prediction tools seemed unreliable in so small a vessel.
Principle Particulars
Length Overall 2.48 m
Length of marine ply hull 2.33 m
Beam 1.37 m
Estimated Empty Weight 65 kg
Maximum Load 300 kg
(incl. outboard/tank/fuel etc.)
Maximum Outboard 10 hp (8 kW)
Note that small ships frequently are overweight when completed, and care will be
required in materials selection and building if the empty weight is to be achieved!
This design had a troubled history! By way of background, when an Apprentice in this
Naval Architecture business mumblty mumble years past, a Senior and Experienced
Naval Architect (?Mr. Noel Rily) admonished me: " BEWARE OF THE PICTURE DRAWERS !". Sage advice ~~ but this RIB 2.5 started as a picture to grace my
DELFTship Schooner 19 (?) model .... and only later did I think to upgrade the picture
to a design in its own right ~~~~
~~~~ To cut a long story short, I wish now that I had designed the effing
RIB 2.5 ab initio rather than trying to advance the picture to the design!!
