JACK EVERYMAN, schooner
Having decided that I would not live long enough to build Schooner 19, having read up on Stitch-n-Glue (S&G) construction and having consulted with Captain Alfred Bulltop S____, I set about a ruthlessly simple
12 m (40 ft) / twin keel schooner ..... one even Jack Everyman or
Joan Citizen could build .....
JACK EVERYMAN is a twin keel / aft cockpit, schooner rigged
cruising yacht of composite construction (fiberglass over Marine
Ply). She is a very comfortable cruiser for a live-aboard couple but
has only austerity accommodation (quarter berths) for guests.
(Hmm - a favourite Aunt used to say that guests are like fish: they
begin to smell after about 3 days ..... dunno how she put up with
me for 2 and 3 weeks at a time in the '60s!). Auxiliary propulsion is
by an air cooled diesel outboard located in a Aft Peak. The primary
electrical generation is solar backed up with an air cooled 3kVA
diesel generator.

Arrangement
The topside arrangement is austere, comprising bollards / cleats /fairleads as necessary, an anchor / line handling winch and two sheet winches. Halliards, lifts & etc. may be cleated at the mast or led to the cockpit, this latter being preferred.
To minimise the risk of pooping, the cockpit is small but adequate for four persons to work the ship. At its forward end is a small dodger/doghouse to protect essential navigation equipment (eg., multi function displays, radios etc.) and the companionway to the Saloon. The Saloon is generously sized and includes an office area, an "L" shaped settee + rocker recliner and dining table as well as the two quarter berths. Forward of the Saloon are the Galley to Port and Head to Starboard. Forward again is the Master Cabin with a comfortable double berth, wardrobes, lockers and etc.
Construction
Hull construction is composite: fiberglass over S&G Marine Ply, while most other structure is fiberglass over Marine Ply. Hardwood structure used as necessary to support local loads (eg., keels etc.). The keels and skeg are steel weldments. The structure generally accords to ABS requirements.
Rig
JACK EVERYMAN is gaff schooner rigged, having three sails, all on booms so is self tacking. The sail area is modest (64 m^2 only in mains'l, fores'l & stays'l) but this may be easily enlarged to (say) 100 m^2 with a larger mains'l, and a jib (as shewn above). This is at the expense of the self tacking ability of the smaller rig.
Propulsion
A major simplification over Schooner 19 is the propulsion system ~~ but it still is not conventional! The auxiliary engine is an air cooled diesel outboard ex China (? numerous suppliers) in a water-tight Aft Peak abaft the cockpit, being so located to keep engine noises and smells as far from the saloon as possible.
Electrical
A small DG set is shoe-horned into the Aft Peak but the main electrical generation is solar via 8 panels located on the house deckhead.
